Camarillo Ranch Project Reveal: Family Room

We’re so excited to round out 2018 with the reveal of our 70’s Ranch Reno in the Den! Two weeks ago, we revealed their gorgeous, airy living room with views for days. To quickly recap, this gorgeous family home was passed down from the clients’ grandmother and needed to be brought into the 21st century or they were going to sell. After some serious negotiation, we convinced them to stay (where else would you get those sprawling views?!)

What was once wall to wall shag carpet, an oversized, asymmetrical fireplace and wood paneling overload is now a cozy coastal family hangout. Our clients use this space as their main TV room, but we weren’t ready to let the TV be the focal point. To freshen things up, we cut the fireplace that had previously extended the length of the wall and centered it. We removed all the wall paneling and white washed the brick which instantly elevated the design.

We had custom cabinets built to frame the new fireplace and make it feel more “built-in”. To keep the eye moving and give the family the new, California bungalow vibe they were looking for, we opted for floating shelves above the new cabinets instead of the expected full book case.

Once the renovation was complete, we turned our attention to those amazing views by framing the sliding glass patio doors with floor to ceiling linen curtains (these are up to 30% off at Pottery Barn today). We brightened up the dark hardwood floors with a plush neutral rug (this one is under $200 for an 8x10’ right now!) and brought in a wrap around sectional to provide the whole family comfortable seating (this similar option is 20% off right now). Because the sectional creates a u-shape, we opted for a round coffee table (also love this more-affordable version) to allow for easy flow of traffic and to avoid any sharp edges for the kids to hurt themselves on.

We created a multi-tasking work space with a desk in the corner as well for kids to do homework, to pay bills, or provide extra seating with guests. We styled the space with layers of textural pillows like these linen ones (currently under $40 a piece) and this subtle boho pattern. The new floating shelves were topped off with faux greenery, chic family photos, substantial terracotta and ceramic pieces and a cluster of these fab magnifying glasses (also on sale). The last few details include these black and white storage boxes, metallic sculptural jacks, this natural sculpture piece and a few of our favorite coffee table books (here, here and here).

As a reminder, most of our projects use to-the-trade items only, so we’ve linked look-alike or similar items below. If you’re interested in our full interior design services, shoot us a note here! Wishing you all a very happy New Year + we’ll see you in 2019!
