Family Room + Breakfast Nook
We’re back today with more from our California Traditional project and we’re sharing the traditional but casual family room and the coziest breakfast nook. Here in the family room, our clients were most concerned about durability and longevity - with two small toddlers, things needed to be wiped down, removed and washed, and soft sided.
To keep this project on budget, we utilized the clients’ existing gray sectional which allowed us to invest in some other key pieces. To highlight the existing millwork, we picked up the geometric shapes in the two consoles on either side of the fireplace. They add balance, add a focal point aside the television, and add convenient toy storage for the littles. To bring the eye up, we paired botanical prints on either side (here and here). Because we didn’t need the artwork in this room to be a feature, we opted for affordable prints instead of custom pieces.
If you’ve been following along with our California Traditional project, you know entertaining is a major part of their life. Hosting their large family bring them immense joy and we wanted to carry that focus into every room. Here in the family room, we custom made a vegan leather ottoman for the coffee table. This serves as additional seating, a surface for serving (that can easily be cleaned) and has no hard edges for little ones to hurt themselves. Here is a similar version available for retail purchase. Additional we added an upholstered camp chair to bring in another textural element while keeping the edges soft.
We styled out the room with layers of designer pillows in complementing colors of blues and rust with contrasting patterns. Oversized accessories on the console tables like ceramic vases and woven trays are multi-purpose for entertaining and look great styled on furniture. Scroll through to see the breakfast nook reveal!
The breakfast nook in our California Traditional Project was designed entirely with versatility in mind. With multiple toddlers and frequent extended family visits, the built in banquet offers a cozy place to hang out, but can seat up to five people. we kept the dining chairs low profile so the pretty garden view wouldn’t be blocked. To make it cozy, we custom upholstered the bench cushion with performance fabric and curated designer pillows to bring in pattern and texture. In the room that people seem to congregate most, the flexible seating invites people to linger (without being in the way).
