Living + Dining Room: Beach to the Burbs

Lindsey Borchard

New Year, New Decade—we couldn’t be more thrilled to introduce you to one of our favorite LBD projects to date. Our latest project is lovingly dubbed as our “Beach to ‘Burbs Project,” this super sweet family home is the perfect casual-yet-elevated style with unique moments of character infused.

Our clients moved from Manhattan Beach to Westlake Village looking for a home to raise their growing family. With busy careers as a nurse and a firefighter—plus two kids under two years old!—our clients needed a 100% kid-friendly space that provided a sense of calm in the chaos, all while meeting the functional needs of an active family.

Not only did our homeowners have incredible taste from the get-go, but they placed complete trust in our work, which made the entire process so fun. Their trust gave us creative freedom to try new things, think outside the box, and design them a home they’d wholeheartedly love.

Stepping into the home, you’re immediately greeted by the front living space, so we knew it had to make an A++ first impression. Our clients wanted to incorporate their grandmother’s piano, and we decided to make this treasured heirloom piece a focal point of the whole space. We used a custom framed vintage sailing flag flanked with gold sconces on either side to fill the wall space above and provide maximum impact.

When it came to furnishings, durability was key, so we sourced a performance fabric sofa, along with two custom upholstered chairs and a corner leather chair for an extra dose of personality. The front living room also features an ottoman/coffee table that we customized in a fun blue striped performance fabric to layer in color, and deliver on both comfort and function in a kid-friendly fashion.

In the dining space, we continued to draw color inspiration from the California coastline with a serene palette of cool blue tones, and warm, airy neutrals. While the dining room definitely had a smaller footprint, we wanted to make a serious impact using lighting, pattern, and a fun pops of color. Rather than stick to a single fixture, we decided to bundle five gorgeous woven pendants and we love the one-of-a-kind look it brought to the space. Along with lighting, we carried in a sense of personality through the dining chairs custom upholstered in a coastal-inspired pattern for a more casual-cool aesthetic.

Now that you’ve had a first sneak peek into this Westlake Village home, we’re pretty certain you love it as much as we do. But the best news yet? We’re only just getting started! Keep an eye on the LBD blog over the coming weeks as we continue to unveil our Beach to ‘Burbs Project and show you what makes this family home so incredibly special. Until then, peep the full project tour on IGTV here.
