One look at the show-stopping fireplace from our Navy Street living room reveal and you will be all in on this gorgeous space. The project was a total transformation from builder basic and lacking in character to a modern family home perfect for entertaining. We renovated the space with a new fireplace, custom built-ins and full furnishings for the living room, dining room, master bedroom, and guest bedroom. But seriously, how about that fireplace? It previously was adorned in all black granite, making it too heavy and outdated in the middle of the room. We overhauled this focal point with gorgeous cement tile in a fun, neutral pattern to create character and visual interest while allowing it to blend seamlessly with the rest of the decor.
Never too much storage, we reworked the two empty spots on either side of the fireplace into custom storage benches perfect for storing toys and blankets. By utilizing kid-friendly performance fabric on the custom bench cushion, the family need not worry about spills or sticky hands. We finished off the benches with designer and vintage pillows for a really curated, eclectic look.
When it came to the furnishings, the goal was to create a cozy, casual space perfect for entertaining and relaxing. We wanted to optimize the seating and make it easy for them to move things around when throwing parties. We chose a large sofa to center the room and then layered in two sets of chairs. Since their little boy is still growing, we decided to incorporate a custom faux leather ottoman into the design. This provided a piece big enough to use as a coffee table but corner-free for the safety of their little one.
Where we splurged:
Because the fireplace was such a focal point, we splurged on creating a gorgeous statement piece with lots of extra storage. The other splurge moments included the custom ottoman and sideboard table.
Where we saved:
We were able to save on the rugs by layering a larger jute rug with a faux vintage rug in a smaller scale that they can replace every so often without breaking the bank.
By downloading the prints above the sofa and framing them ourselves, we were able to save significantly on the artwork. We also sourced the print above the sideboard from a local artist (found on Instagram) and framed it ourselves.
The final result took this family home from basic and outdated to modern and bespoke, take the full tour of the #NavyStreet living room below and tell us what detail you’re loving the most!
